HOME BASED BUSINESS : Start a Home-Based Business in Desktop Publishing

You have what it takes to start a home-based business in desktop publishing if you have a bit of a creative side, a printer, software on your computer, and will-power to work at home.

Almost every company use desktop publishing. Some examples of desktop publishing are newsletters, brochures, fliers, business forms/letters, business cards, catalogs, pamphlets, CD covers, and much, much more.

Customers can range from small business owners to large corporations.

Business Planning
It is important that you write out a business plan, set prices for your services, determine your work hours, decide on your market niche. Are you willing to provide all types of services for your clients? Who will you market to? These things are important when considering the success of your home-based desktop publishing company.

Entrepreneurial Skills
Running your own home-based business takes time and organization. You also need the skills to market your company to your customers. As an entrepreneur, you will be responsible for handling your tax write-offs, inventory, maintenance of your equipment, and balancing your finances.

Creative Skills
There is not much skills needed to start a home-based business in desktop publishing, however, as you grow you will need to educated in areas were you are weak. A company may request that you design a logo for their company and you have to make sure that all rights are cleared if you are including other designers images.

Investing
Most equipment you probably already have in your home office, such as a color printer, a computer and Microsoft office. This is good equipment to start out with. You will probably want to invest in a design program, such as adobe illustrator as you grow larger.

Contracts and Business Plans

It is very important that you write out an official business plan. This should be done before accepting your first client. If you don't have a contract, a lot of things can get out of hand.

Make sure you know what you want out of your business. How much do you want to charge and how much you want to make overhead? How much time do you want to invest? Do you want to run this business full-time or part-time? A business plan can help will all of these concerns.
